Introduction

At Elder Transition Consulting (eldertransitionconsulting.com), we have recently assisted several clients in their 90s (yes, 90s!) with their moves and would like to discuss the differences between moving for those who choose to downsize in their 70s compared to those in their 90s. Moving is already one of the top 5 stressors and adding age and health into the mix can make it more challenging. This is an indication that people are staying in their homes longer before they downsize to a smaller home or a senior living community.

Downsizing in Your 70s

  • Clarity and Readiness: Many in their 70s approach the decision to downsize with intention, often motivated by health scares, ongoing concerns, or a desire for greater safety and comfort.
  • Managing Accumulated Belongings: The realization that their current home may be overwhelming due to years of gathering possessions encourages action.
  • Shifting Family Dynamics: Clients often find that their children are not interested in inheriting their possessions, prompting them to sell or donate valuable items.
  • Positive Outlook: There is typically a willingness to let go and optimism about starting a new chapter, viewing the move as a positive and proactive step.

Downsizing in Your 90s

  • Slower, More Complex Process: For those in their 90s, downsizing is complicated by decades spent in one home, resulting in a significant accumulation of belongings.
  • Health and Emotional Challenges: Health concerns, delayed decision-making, and grief over leaving a familiar environment slow the pace of transition.
  • Timing and Emotional Toll: Moves may occur later than ideal, sometimes leading to increased anxiety, sadness, anger, and feelings of paralysis as clients face the prospect of change.
  • Sentimental Value: This generation, shaped by the depression era, often attaches deep emotional significance to possessions, making it especially hard to let go.
